More About Grace
Grace studied Sociology and History of Art at university. She wanted to work with her hands so became a labourer after graduation and then went into the construction industry as an apprentice stonemason.
As an apprentice, she has a mentor who teaches her and checks her work. On-site, she usually teams up with another person, so they can lift heavy stone together. In the workshop, there is more focus on solo craft.
Stonemasonry is an ancient profession. Grace loves that she’s in contact with history through her work. She often finds medieval mason marks on the cathedral stone - the signatures of the masons who originally worked them - and fossils inside it that have been preserved for millions of years.
Aside from getting up early, the hardest part of her job is lifting stones all day. Being a stonemason can be physically tough, but the more you work the stronger you get.
Outside of work, Grace likes spending time in nature. She enjoys mountain hiking and is teaching herself how to use wood to make useful things.
