More About Grace

  • Grace studied Sociology and History of Art at university. She wanted to work with her hands so became a labourer after graduation and then went into the construction industry as an apprentice stonemason.

  • As an apprentice, she has a mentor who teaches her and checks her work. On-site, she usually teams up with another person, so they can lift heavy stone together. In the workshop, there is more focus on solo craft.

  • Stonemasonry is an ancient profession. Grace loves that she’s in contact with history through her work. She often finds medieval mason marks on the cathedral stone - the signatures of the masons who originally worked them - and fossils inside it that have been preserved for millions of years.

  • Aside from getting up early, the hardest part of her job is lifting stones all day. Being a stonemason can be physically tough, but the more you work the stronger you get.

  • Outside of work, Grace likes spending time in nature. She enjoys mountain hiking and is teaching herself how to use wood to make useful things.
