More About Tom
At school, Tom loved using computers to create and print 3D designs. He’s always loved drawing, and CAD let him get his pictures out of his head and into the real world.
Although he wanted to be an architect, Tom didn’t like the idea of studying for seven years to qualify. So he looked for a career in CAD instead, as it still let him work with buildings and produce technical drawings.
He did an apprenticeship after leaving school and was able to learn all the skills he needed on the job. His employer helped him gain a BTEC before he got a full-time job.
Junior CAD technicians, like Tom, can earn £20,000 - £30,000 a year. Senior CAD draughtsmen could be earning £40,000 or higher.
Right now, Tom lives with his best friend (who's a kitchen fitter), but he’s saving to buy his first house and hopes to move into his own place soon.
